I'm surrounded by oversexed Indians who think they're supermodels in a Bollywood film, chain smoking/swine flu spreading Latinos, stiff/spoiled/whining/callous Chinese, drunk haoles, and ethnic minorities who practically bathe in cologne. This of course, is far from ironic. This comment would have had me called into the dean's office if I were still at Punahou
No access to a nice beach
I haven't tasted live he'e for a couple months
An overabundance of work
Didn't go to NC
Missing friends, especially someone who is much too far away to do anything about it

Saw a Silversun Pickups concert with my roommates and friends
Hung around Providence
Hung around in Boston
Did no work until Sunday this weekend
Hung out with Joe Cool, one of the coolest people in the world
Watched Rain Man and refreshed some memories

ReplyDeleteI learned most of this from Microeconomics class. The first place I thought of was Chinatown. It is so small, and yet, cannot be troubleshooted.
Let us first recognize that public housing is a bad idea. It is a sad but true that most of its inhabitants have low-income levels, moreso have socioeconomical problems, domestic problems, and putting all them in one place most times creates an unhealthy atmosphere.
As like many other problems, public housing must be solved pragmatically.
1. (This has been done before in some cities, possibly Chicago) Government subsidies will be issued to construction w/ tax breaks, a % of the properties will be priced at affordable housing
2. Do away with public housing. Turn the apartments into condos. Government loans - all the better since the gov't had nationalized FNMA and FHLMC - with a relatively low interest. Residents will have the incentive to take care of their property and maintain some sort of order
3. Education & Community work. (this of course, excludes Hawaii; we need a different solution) Education must be state-funded. Many small towns have not kept up with the advancement of curriculum/instruction due to town's only receiving funds based off of real property taxes.
I find that this is one way to prevent crime among residents in public housing. It should be mandatory along with paying for your condo.
4. I still have not figured out a solution to crime/drug problems but again, education will slow down and eventually stop the cycle. The police and FBI will hopefully do their job
5. Raise the minimum wage. Theoretically, it will increase employment.
That's it for now. I believe in the condos idea. As of this year they knocked down all public housing in Atlanta where the first public housing projects were made (back in the 30s). It's still 'in the making' and it sort of looks like the cost of it all won't be cheap but that's the price we need to pay.
